You’re Not Who You Used To Be (and that’s not a problem)
I was talking with a client this week. Her life has been lifing, to say the least.
In the middle of our conversation she said, “I just want to feel like a badass again.”
And this is what I told her:
Stop comparing your current performance to a past version of yourself who lived under completely different circumstances. From where I’m sitting, you showing up every single day, given your current reality and still doing all the dang things, is by definition pretty damn badass. (Yes, I cuss a little)
But here’s the part that matters.
How often do we measure ourselves against a version of us who had more time, fewer responsibilities, less weight on their shoulders, or a completely different season of life?
We look back at what we built when things were simpler and quietly decide that today’s effort isn’t enough. That’s not strategy. That’s misalignment.
As a creative director, this is something I see constantly. People try to run today’s business with yesterday’s capacity. They set goals based on old infrastructure. They judge momentum based on a different season entirely. And then they feel like they’re failing.
Listen. I’m not a big believer in excuses. But I am a big believer in context.
If life has handed you more than your fair share of curveballs and you’re still showing up, still serving clients, still building, still putting one foot in front of the other even when it feels like you’re barely gaining ground… that counts.
That is strength.
That is leadership.
That is building in real time.
So here’s the practical part.
Instead of asking, “Why am I not performing like I used to?” try asking:
What are the actual conditions I’m building under right now?
Given those conditions, what does strong look like?
What would it look like to define momentum honestly instead of nostalgically?
Creative direction isn’t just about branding and offers. It’s about aligning your expectations with your reality so you can build something sustainable.
You don’t need to perform like a past version of yourself to be powerful. You just need to build from where you actually stand.
If this season feels heavier than the last one, but you’re still here, still trying, still refining, still brave enough to want more, that’s not weakness.
That’s grit.
And in my book, that’s pretty damn badass.
